Update : 11 Sep 2017, 07:15 PM
Within the last eight months, 2,873 people have died and 6,500 were injured in 2,419 road accidents across Bangladesh. Among the dead, 344 were women and 381 were children. The statistics were published in a monthly report the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads & Railways (NCPSRR). The report was collated based on information provided by 22 national dailies, 10 local newspapers and eight online news portals. According to the report, though the rate of accidents was high in the first five months of this year, it has significantly dropped since June. The highest number of accidents was in February, when 56 women and 58 children were among 427 dead in 372 accidents. August reported the lowest number of deaths, with 25 women and 31 children among 279 dead in 217 accidents.Meanwhile, 1,094 were injured in road accidents in February, whereas 503 were injured in August. However, the rate is still above the tolerable limit, and it is possible to lower it to half what it currently is in compliance with the declaration of the UN, reports the committee. The report added that the main reasons behind road accidents are reckless driving, breaking of traffic rules, driving for long periods without break, dangerous turns and poor conditions of roads, lack of proper implementation of laws restricting the use of unfit cars, and the recruitment of drivers who do not have licenses.
