An armed member of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) sustained a gunshot injury in Ruma upazila of Bandarban.
The injured has been identified as Boyram Lian Bom, aged 24, son of Jarem Lal Bom from Ruma's Bethel neighbourhood.
According to sources and local reports, members of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), armed and dressed in civilian clothing, arrived at Ruma Bazar to extort money from traders at around 11:30am on Monday.
When they encountered an army patrol team, a confrontation and gunfire exchange occurred in Ruma Sadar's Zaion neighbourhood. The KNF members opened fire on the army personnel, who returned fire, resulting in the injury of one KNF member.
The army personnel rescued the injured KNF member, who was initially admitted to Ruma Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Bandarban Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
Efforts have been made to restore peace in the Bandarban hill district, with initiatives by the Kuki Chin National Army (KNA), the armed wing of the Kuki Chin National Front (KNF). Discussions have been held to help members return to normal life and improve the situation.
On May 29, an exchange meeting took place at Arun Saraki Town Hall, with leaders from various ethnic groups participating. Additionally, on June 9, an 18-member peace committee was formed under the leadership of Hill District Council Chairman Ka Shoi Hla, with the involvement of leaders from various ethnic groups.
This committee held two virtual meetings with the KNF to advance the peace process. The recent shooting incident in Ruma occurred on Monday.
Ruma police station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Mohammad Abul Hashem stated that the injured person had been taken to Bandarban Sadar Hospital for treatment. If the army decides to file a case, it will be registered at the police station.
