Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) reportedly held one of the top leaders of the banned militant-outfit Hizbut Tahrir from the city's Hazaribag area.
The arrestee was identified as Talat Mahmud Sayen, 29, son of Nowshad Reza, a resident of Lakshmipur.
"Talat is an active member of Hizbut Tahrir's Dawat and financial unit. He was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment in an Anti-Terrorism case. But he went into hiding after getting bail," said RAB-2 Assistant Director (Media) Senior ASP Md Fazlul Haque.
Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a drive in the Hazaribag area on Saturday and detained Talat with a huge amount of extremist books and leaflets along with computers, mobiles and various types of equipment, he said.
"He was trying to gather other activists. So that they can distribute extremist leaflets and books to provoke the youngsters against the government," he added.
He would be handed over to the authorities concerned after necessary legal actions, he further added.
