Sheikh Md Mohibullah is the leader of the militant organization Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya.
He has an extensive network in greater Barisal. There, he trained 50 to 60 youths in militancy.
Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Asaduzzaman said this at a press briefing held at DMP media centre on Wednesday.
At the briefing, Asaduzzaman said Mohibullah used to deliver sermons and inspire members of the militant group after taking them into the hill districts.
His main target was to psychologically prepare the new recruits for “jihad” after misinterpreting religious scripture, the CTTC chief said.
He said that in January 2022 Shura member Dr Shaker alias Shishir, fugitive militant leader Shamin Mahfuz and Md Mohibullah alias “Bholar Shayekh”, who were arrested near CTTC, went to the training camp of Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, located in Durgam Hills of Naikhongchari upazila of Bandarban district.
At the time, armed training was going on under the supervision of the Kuki National Front (KNF) in the training camp. There they met KNF president Nathan Bom and other leaders.
After that, the name of the organization was officially named as Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya and the Shura Committee was formed.
The CTTC chief said that Md Mohibullah then became the nayeb-e-amir of the militant group.
After living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region for some time, Mohibullah returned to Dhaka and carried out different activities, including intensifying communication through encrypted messaging app, he said.
Mohibullah also had a number of meetings with top leaders of militant groups over strengthening activities in Dhaka, Sylhet and Kishoreganj. He also used to go to madrasas in Hathazari of Chittagong district, said Asaduzzaman.
Mohibullah was also an active member of the banned extremist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B) when he was a student of a madrasa in Hathazari and took “jihadi training” with other members of Huji-B.
He gave the details during primary investigations by the CTTC.
He was arrested from Syedabad Bus Terminal area of the capital on Tuesday. At the time, two mobiles and a laptop were recovered from him.
