Hearing on the appeals lodged by war criminal Jamaat leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman questioning the death sentence given to him by the International Crimes Tribunal began yesterday at the Supreme Court Appellate Division.

Defence lawyers Khandker Mahbub Hossain and Nazrul Islam read out the depositions of two prosecution witnesses on charge number one before the four-member apex court bench headed by Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.

The al-Badr leader was handed down capital punishment for his superior responsibility in indiscriminate killings at Sohagpur and killing freedom fighter Golam Mostafa.

On May 9 last year, the second International Crimes Tribunal delivered the verdict against Kamaruzzaman.

On June 6, the assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami filed an appeal with the apex court challenging the tribunal verdict.

Kamaruzzaman was also sentenced life in prison on two other charges while he received 10 years’ jail on another charge for torturing a teacher. He got acquittal from two other charges.
