The Department of Prisons suspended two jail guards and ordered that a departmental case against two chief jail guards be lodged yesterday (Wednesday), in regards to the suicide of a prison on Tuesday in Chittagong Central Jail.
The authorities also formed two separate probe committees, each comprising of three members, to investigate the incident and the committees were asked to submit reports as early as possible, said sources in Chittagong Central Jail.
Md Zakir Hossain, 30, prisoner number 8385/A, who was awarded 14 years of imprisonment in an abduction case lodged with Karnaphuli police station in the port city, committed suicide by hanging himself from the railing of the stairs around 8:30pm on Tuesday, said the sources.
Seeing Zakir hanging, the jail authorities rushed him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead, said Md Sagir Mia, senior jail super of Chittagong Central Jail.
Two jail guards – Ziabul Islam and Mohammad Alamgir – were suspended while the authorities ordered that a departmental case be lodged against two chief jail guards, Mohammad Hossain and Abdur Rashid, said the Senior Jail Super Sagir.
He took actions yesterday, of his own volition, against the four jail personnel for their negligence during duty.
Asim Kanti Paul, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Prison in Chittagong, will lead a probe committee comprising of Jail Super Mainuddin Bhuiyan of Rangamati and Jail Super Didarul Alam of Feni.
The DIG (prison) told Dhaka Tribune that he had formed the probe body by in accordance with the instructions of the Inspector General (prison), to look into the matter and he hopes that the committee will submit the report within two or three days.
Meanwhile, the Senior Jail Super formed another probe body, led by Dr Mostafizur Rahman, jail doctor of Chittagong Central Jail Hospital, said the Senior Jail Super.
