Update : 03 Jun 2014, 08:57 PM

The Anti-Corruption Commission will try to find out if former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs AB Tajul Islam along with other accused was involved in the scandal over gold crests presented to foreign friends for their contributions to the 1971 liberation war.

“We will try to find out whether the former state minister was involved in financial irregularities,” ACC Chairman M Bodiuzzaman told reporters at its Segunbagicha headquarters.

“We are waiting for the probe report on gold crest scam prepared by the inquiry committee formed by the ministry concerned. As the committee has already found links of some people with the scam, we have decided to investigate financial irregularities.”

He said a two-member committee was formed to investigate the matter. The ACC on Monday decided to investigate the scam involving civil servants and public representatives who had allegedly misappropriated government funds by making the crests with less gold. A probe report found that 13 senior bureaucrats, including AB Tajul Islam, had links with irregularities in providing less gold and silver with the crests, causing the government a Tk7.04 crore loss.
