HC conditionally allows adverts in English

Update : 29 May 2014, 10:59 PM

The High Court yesterday directed the Information Ministry to stop all English advertisements in electronic and print media within one month, except for those which have no other scope but to be in English.

It also directed the home secretary to stop writing all nameplates in English, number plates of vehicles and other signboards in all its departments including the police by a timeframe.

The court has asked the home secretary and the information secretary to submit reports within July 1 stating the “effective measure”  they have taken to implement Bangla at all levels.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order after Deputy Attorney General Biswojit Roy placed a report of the Public Administration Ministry on implementation of Bangla.

During the hearing, Biswojit said: “Letters asking for implementing the use of Bangla have been sent to the authorities concerned. The government needs more time to implement the order.”

The court said no effective step had been taken so far except for exchanging of letters.
