Police yet to ascertain reason behind murder of college girl

Update : 15 May 2014, 06:16 PM

One-and-a-half month has passed since the murder of Mahmuda Khatun Liza, a college student in Sirajganj, but police are yet to solve the mystery behind the killing.

The investigating officer’s role in the case has also been questioned in view of the sluggish progress of probe. Liza’s friend Bannya, daughter of tile trader Jahedul Islam and also the prime suspect in the case, is still at large.

Meanwhile, Liza’s alleged lover Rajib Ghosh, owner of a medical hall in the city and once a notorious pethidine peddler, disappeared mysteriously following the girl’s death. The investigating officer has not considered a possible link between Rajib’s unexpected disappearance and the killing, which has produced mixed reactions among residents of the city.

The slow progress of the investigation has put Liza’s father Liakat Ali in a predicament. Many have demanded the investigation be handed over to the Detective Branch of police or the Criminal Investigation Department or RAB.

Dr Nurul Islam, who performed the autopsy at Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, mentioned in the report that the girl died from injuries.

Sirajganj Sadar police station Sub-inspector Nurul Islam, also investigating officer in the case, said Rajib could not be made a suspect in the case until Bannya’s arrest.

“Otherwise, the Hindu community will be infuriated,” he said.

Police Super SM Emran Hossain said there is a drive going on to arrest Bannya that could give police some clues.

Liza fell off a six-storey building in the city’s SS road on March 24. She died 10 days later at Enam Hospital while under treatment.

Police are yet to find out whether she jumped to commit suicide or if someone pushed her.
