Hefazat’s Mufti Izhar indicted in anti-corruption case

Update : 12 May 2014, 08:01 PM

Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, nayeb-e-ameer of radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam, was indicted yesterday in an ACC case filed for not submitting wealth statement.

Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mujibur Rahman framed the charges after a hearing and set May 29 to begin the trial with deposition of prosecution witness, public prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune.

Izhar is also the principal of Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar, better known as the Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa – an alleged den of the banned Islamist outfit Huji.

The ACC submitted the charge sheet to the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on April 21.

The case was filed with Khulshi police station on July 17 last year as the Hefazat leader had failed to respond to an ACC notice sent on July 4 seeking his wealth information.

Earlier, charges were framed against Izhar in a case filed in connection with the blast at his madrasa on October 7 last year which left three students killed.
