A policeman’s intelligence and bravery led to the arrest of three abductors and the rescue of the abducted in Kushtia on Tuesday.
The police official, sub-inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of Najirpur police camp in Kushtia Sadar upazila, rescued Abdul Matin, 17, a rice mill worker and the son of Abdur Rahim of the Bara Ailchara area of the sadar upazila. The kidnappers are Matin, 25, Didar, 22, and Sumon, 24.
Habibur first informed senior officials of a white microbus and then began chasing it on his motorcycle on the Kushtia-Alamdanga road after receiving a call from a local journalist at around 09:30pm who told him that a gang of kidnappers and the abducted were inside the vehicle. He thought of a trick and promptly called some locals, asking them to block the road. Senior policemen also applied the trick.
The locals succeeded in preventing the microbus from driving past the Kaburhat area at around 10pm. They made the abductors get out of the vehicle, set it on fire, beat up the three kidnappers and rescued the teen. Police later arrested the criminals.
Kushtia Additional Police Super Abu Bakkar Siddiqi said SI Habibur drove after the criminals, risking his life.
“His courage and astuteness not only helped us collar the abductors but also led to the rescue of the abducted,” added Abu Bakkar.
All three abductors are residents of Chuadanga.
