Jamaat man killed in ‘gunfight’

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami killed in a so-called “gunfight” with police in Debhata upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased, Sirajul Islam, from Chiledanga village of the upazila was a suspected criminal in different cases including the murder of Parulia Awami League leader Raihan and cutting of trees.

Debhata police station OC Md Jalal Uddin confirmed the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said when they had conducted a raid in the village early yesterday, armed activists of Jamaat hurled cocktails at the police. In retaliation, police fired 10 rounds of bullets that triggered the gunfight.

Sirajul received bullet injuries while his associates fled the spot. Later, he was taken to Shokhipur Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead. The OC said: “Two police members were also injured in the incident. We have recovered two arms from the spot.
