Ex-DC of Gazipur jailed for defying HC order

The High Court has awarded a month's imprisonment to former deputy commissioner of Gazipur Syed Mizanur Rahman for defying an order of the court.

The bench of Justice Sharif Uddin Chaklader and Justice Abu Taher Md. Saifur Rahman awarded the punishment.

Rahman is now director (administration) of the Saver Public Administration Training Centre.

The court also jailed Abdul Rouf, former manager of the Bhowal Rajcourt of Wards, for 15 days and fined Tk1 crore and sentenced former chairman of the land reform board Monirul Islam and assistant manager of the Bhowal Rajcourt of Wards Sabbir Hossain for five days each.

They were awarded punishment for non-compliance with the court's order issued in 2008.

Former Police Super Alamgir Alam, former Officer-in-Charge of Joydebpur thana Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Shahjalal and Ansar Adjutant Pabitra Kumar Saha of Gazipur were freed as the charges against them were not proved.

Kalimullah, a resident of Lakkhipura area under Joydebpur upazila along with some local people, jointly filed a case with the joint district's judge court on January 6, 2008 seeking an order of injunction so that they are not evicted from their possessions.

The joint district judge's court rejected their plea and later they moved an appeal before the High Court.

The High Court on March 3, 2008 stayed the trial court order and issued injunction on any attempt of evictions.

But, the local administration led by Deputy Commissioner Syed Mizanur Rahman by conducting a drive evicted the petitioners.

Later a plea was moved before the High Court bringing allegation of disobeying the court's order.

The High Court issued rule asking explanation from the respondents and later the matter was disposed of by awarding the punishment to several persons including the former DC of Gazipur.
