Local government bodies asked to protect people’s lives

Update : 04 Dec 2013, 07:51 PM

The government has asked the local government bodies to protect people and their assets during the opposition’s movements and to take legal action against the attackers.

The local government division under the LGRD and cooperatives ministry gave the directives yesterday in a letter to administrators, mayors and chairmen of all local government institutes – districts councils, city corporations, municipalities, upazila parishads and union councils.

Md Jahangir Alam, deputy secretary of the division, signed the letter on behalf of its secretary.

The letter reads: “It was seen that some miscreants are uprooting the sleepers of the railway tracks, cutting trees from different roads and torching people’s houses and different public establishments. Some of the media are publishing and broadcasting such reports.

“They are killing the innocent people by blasting bombs and throwing petrol bombs. They are destroying the public assets. It is cognisable offense. It is necessary to take legal action against them under the public safety act.”

The letter says it is the duty and responsibility of the local government chiefs to ensure safety and security of the people as per the local government law and related rules. So they must act against such violence.

Jahangir yesterday said he hoped that the local government chiefs would take necessary steps.
