Chairman of the National Board of Revenue Golam Rahman on Tuesday said the NBR report did not say Nobel laureate Dr Mohammed Yunus had dodged tax.
The report made mention of some irregularities, he told reporters after inaugurating the Bond Commissionerate Office in Chittagong.
The NBR chairman also said they had stressed the need for examining the income of Dr Yunus in different countries during his tenure as the managing director of Grameen Bank.
NBR is examining if the immunity from tax on the money brought from abroad was under legal framework or not.
“If the irregularities were detected finally, the Bangladesh Bank and board of directors of Grameen Bank would take necessary measure in this regard,” he added.
A government servant needs to take permission while receiving any gift worth more than Tk500 from any person or organisation, he went on.
Dr Yunus had brought Tk50 crore from abroad during his service and obtained a tax immunity of Tk13 crore.
“If Dr Yunus had not taken any prior permission in this regard, the tax immunity was illegal,” he added.
Earlier, the NBR chairman inaugurated the Bond Commissionerate office at a function at WASA crossing in the city with Bond Commissioner Abdul Mannan Sikder in the chair.
NBR members Mohammed Nasir Uddin and Mohammed Firoz Shah Alam addressed, among others.
