A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Md Sarowar Kamal, who police claimed was a site engineer during the construction of the Rana Plaza in Savar, on 3 days’ remand.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam granted the remand plea of Savar police in the murder case filed in connection with the Rana Plaza collapse.
Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Bijay Krishna Khar, assistant superintendent of police from the Criminal Investigation Department, said in his remand prayer Kamal was arrested at Fultala in Khulna on June 8.
He also said Kamal, who was not enlisted in the First Information Report (FIR), worked as site engineer and supervisor from the beginning till the end of the construction work of the Rana Plaza.
So, for the sake of proper investigation, police need to quiz him, the IO said in his remand plea.
Kamal had no counsel and therefore there was no bail or remand rejection plea.
When the court asked Kamal whether he wanted to say anything in defence, he said he was not an engineer and that he was only a caretaker.
The April 24 collapse of the nine-storey Rana Plaza, that housed five garment factories, a shopping mall and bank, left 1,127 people dead and around 2,500 injured.
Law enforcers have so far made 14 arrests in the murder case filed in connection with the collapse.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested Sohel Rana, the owner of the ill-fated building, from the Benapole border areas in Jessore district on April 28.
The murder case was filed on April 25, a day after the collapse, with Savar police station.
