The High Court has fixed Wednesday for its order on a bail petition for cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, who has been in jail for over nine months after being arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman scheduled the date after hearing the plea on Monday.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua represented Kishore while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain represented the state.

Kishore has been in jail since May last year following his arrest along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who died in prison, on charges of propagating disinformation against the government on social media in a case started by the Rapid Action Battalion.

Earlier on Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim rejected a remand petition for Kishore.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua also submitted an application before the Dhaka court where he stated that Kishore had been "inhumanely tortured" since his arrest last year, and steps should be taken against those responsible for the torture.

On February 23, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police filed a petition seeking three-day remand for Writer Mushtaq Ahmed and Ahmed Kabir Kishore, just two days before the former’s death in jail.

During March and April last year, his cartoons “Life in the Time of Corona,” satirizing the country’s response to Covid-19, were posted on Facebook.
