Law minister: 500,000 pending cases to be reduced by 2020

He urges judges to apply ADR in cases eligible for mediation

Update : 01 Jan 2020, 06:13 PM

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has said his ministry had set a target of reducing at least 500,000 to 600,000 pending cases by 2020.

"We have introduced a justice audit system in order to track the number of unfinished cases. There are 360,000 pending cases already, and we are preparing to arrange the manpower to deal with them in accordance with the system," Anisul said on Wednesday.

The minister was speaking after inaugurating a basic training workshop for assistant judges at the Justice Administration Training Institute (JATI) in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Anisul Huq was of the opinion that the reason behind the large number of pending cases was owing to people's enhanced trust in the justice system.

He laid emphasis on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), urging judges to apply it in cases that were eligible for mediation.

Director General of JATI and former justice Khandakar Musa Khaled, and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Secretary Md Golam Sarwar were present, among others, at the workshop.
