Experts yesterday suggested creating awareness among the people to reduce the growing number of patients with respiratory problems as Asthma Association Bangladesh (AAB) reported 70 lakh Bangladeshis now suffer from asthma.
“Bangladesh Asthma Association in its 1999 report said 70 lakh Bangladeshis now suffer from asthma . . . people should be made aware in redressing the growing complaints of respiratory problems,” AAB Secretary General Sayedul Islam said.
“But the number might have doubled by now due to population growth, weather change and industrial development,” he added.
President Dr Mirza Mohammad Hiron said, “We used to organise trainings for the community healthcare providers as they should be trained to manage respiratory problems, so that people could receive this service from the community clinics at the grassroots.”
The number of people with respiratory problem is growing because of polluted air and lack of awareness, reports BSS.
Asthma is a disorder that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow, leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing while doctors say it could be effectively controlled, if not totally cured.
World Asthma Day is observed on the first Tuesday of May. AAB will observe they Day tomorrow in Bangladesh like any other country across the globe. They will organize a rally at 8 am from their centre at Mohakhali to the main road.
A discussion will also be organized following the rally at its auditorium.
Like the previous years, the theme of the World Asthma Day this year is ‘You can control your asthma’ to enhance awareness to check the outbreak of the disease.
