Bangladesh is considering bringing in Chinese medical experts or, if necessary, sending the severely injured abroad for treatment, said Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Dr Shah Md Helal Uddin on Thursday.
He noted that based on the report and recommendations of the Chinese medical team, the government will take further action regarding the injured.
The Chinese medical team is satisfied with the treatment of students injured during the mass uprising, adding that it adheres to international medical protocols, Helal added.
The Chinese team has been assessing the treatment of the injured and examining the capacities of local hospitals. "They are impressed with the care provided so far but have identified some gaps in terms of equipment," he added.
At the invitation of the Bangladesh government, the Chinese medical team arrived in Dhaka on September 22 and began their assessments the following day.
During their visit, they reviewed the conditions of 160 injured individuals, including the medical records of 105 people, some of whom are in critical condition.
Dr Helal Uddin explained that the Chinese government swiftly responded after being informed by their ambassador. Within 24 hours, a medical team was formed, and they arrived in Bangladesh within 48 hours. The team visited five hospitals and provided advice to local doctors regarding the treatment of the injured.
He further mentioned that the Chinese team is primarily an assessment team. "They will return to China, consult senior authorities and experts, and provide us with a full assessment report."
Currently, three people are in critical condition, two of whom are in the ICU, while one is suffering from serious eye injuries. Some others have nerve damage.
The health ministry will initially focus on treating the severely injured within Bangladesh, based on the Chinese medical team’s report and advice. If necessary, patients may be sent abroad for advanced treatment.
Dr Helal Uddin emphasized that the ministry is committed to ensuring proper medical care for all the injured, including those in serious condition. "There will be no shortage of effort from the Ministry of Health in providing the best possible treatment."
