Update : 31 Oct 2021, 04:32 PM

Bangladesh will start inoculating children aged 12-17 against the coronavirus at eight vaccination centres in Dhaka from Monday.

Health directorate (DGHS) Line Director Dr Md Shamsul Haque, also member secretary of the vaccine deployment panel, confirmed the matter in a virtual bulletin on Sunday.

The eight institutes where the Covid-19 vaccine will be administered are Hurdco International School, Southpoint School and College, Chittagong Grammar School, Ideal School and College, Mirpur Commerce School and College, Kakoli High School and College, Southbreeze School, and Scholastica School in Mirpur.

The authorities have set up 25 booths at each centre, where they will administer the Pfizer shots to children.

The eight institutes will be able to inoculate their own students as well as registered students of nearby schools, said Dr Haque.

The DGHS aims to inoculate 4,000-5,000 children each day, he added.

The campaign will start at Ideal School and College in Motijheel at 9:30am on Monday.

After the successful completion of this initial campaign, it will be expanded to 20 other districts, according to officials.

There are more than 10 million children aged 12-17 in Bangladesh.

The health authorities have decided to administer the Pfizer vaccines to children. For this, the government has a total of three million shots in stock at the moment.

The authorities also conducted a trial by inoculating over 100 students at a school in Manikganj on October 14.

School and college students in Bangladesh returned to classes on September 12 after a pandemic-induced closure for almost a year and half.

The government had shut educational institutions on March 17, 2020, after the country reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8, later extending the closure several times.
