Covid-19: Bangladesh records 261 more deaths; 8,136 new cases

Daily infection rate stands at 26.65%

Bangladesh tallied another 261 Covid-19 deaths and 8,136 new cases on Saturday, as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc in the country.

On the other hand, 16,383 more patients recovered from the infectious disease in the 24 hours between 8am on Friday and 8am on Saturday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 22,411, the total caseload to 1,343,396, and the total number of recoveries to 1,188,820.

Bangladesh crossed the grim milestone of 22,000 deaths on Friday. It took only four days to add the latest 1,000 deaths. Bangladesh crossed the 21,000-mark on Monday. The 20,000-mark was topped on July 28.

Dhaka counted 101 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 62 fatalities.

Khulna division reported 45 deaths, while Barisal reported 12, Rajshahi eight, Sylhet seven, Rangpur 10, and Mymensingh division reported 16 deaths.

Dhaka logged 3,977 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 2,577 and Khulna 428.

As many as 31,714 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 25.65%.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.67%.

Vaccination progress

So far, around 4.34 million people have received the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, while about 1.47 million have only received the first dose and are awaiting the second one.

Moreover, total 3,317,582 people have received their first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine. As many as 92,248 have got their second dsoe of the Chinese jab.

As many as 50,255 people have been administered the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and 7,038 people have received their second dose.

Besides, total 1,101,897 people have received the first dose of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine in the country.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4,294,000 lives and infected over 202,593,000 people across the world till Saturday evening, according to Worldometer.

More than 182,091,000 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
