Covid-19: Bangladesh records 38 more deaths, 1,028 new cases in 24 hours

Total death toll rises to 12,348, nationwide caseload stands at 787,726 as of May 22 morning

Bangladesh has registered 38 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Saturday morning. 

With the latest development, the total number of deaths now stands at 12,348 in the country, according to the daily Covid-19 bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday afternoon.

During the same period of time, 1,028 more people tested positive for Covid-19. With the latest tally, the nationwide caseload stands at 787,726 as of Saturday morning.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 8.41% in the last 24 hours, with 12, 230 samples, including the pending ones, tested in 482 authorized labs – government and private – across the country. 

To date, more than 5.8 million tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.57%.

Of the 38 deceased – 25 men and 13 women – 16 were from Dhaka division, seven from Chittagong, four each from Rajshahi, Khulna, and Sylhet, two from Rangpur, and one from Barisal division.  

All of them died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country.

Sixteen of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 13 between 51 and 60, two between 41 and 50, three aged between 31 and 40, two between 21 and 30, and two were aged between 11 and 20.

So far, 8,928 men (72.30%) and 3,420 women (27.70%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

Since the beginning, 7,103 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,327 in Chittagong, 653 in Rajshahi, 752 in Khulna, 371 in Barisal, 439 in Sylhet, 449 in Rangpur, and 254 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.57%.

The health authorities said 759 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 729,798 patients – 92.65% – have made full recovery across the country.

Currently, 17,799 people are in isolation and 43,538 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,459,000 lives and infected as many as 166,533,000 people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 147,322,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
