More than 4.2 million people given first shot of Covid-19 vaccine in Bangladesh

A total of 5,462,165 people completed their registration to receive the vaccine by 5:30pm on Thursday

Bangladesh on Thursday completed administering the Covid-19 vaccine to over 4.2 million people.

From February 7 till now, a total 4,218,127 healthcare professionals, frontline fighters, and people aged above 40 years old have been immunized against the deadly virus. They include 2,688,462 men and 1,529,665.  

A total 881 people have experienced adverse events. 

Meanwhile, 5,462,165 people had completed vaccine registration till 5:30pm on Thursday, said a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to DGHS, 99,174 people received vaccines on Thursday. Among them, 62,197 were men and 36,977 were women. 

At least nine people experienced some common adverse events. 

Highest number of people vaccinated in Dhaka

On Thursday, the highest 35,827 people were vaccinated in Dhaka division. Among them, 21,324 people were vaccinated in the capital city while 14,503 people were vaccinated outside the capital.

Till now, a total 1,334,187 people have received the first of the two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the division.

Meanwhile, a total 180,265 people have been inoculated in Mymensingh division, 878,560 in Chittagong, 458,192 in Rajshahi, 388,942 in Rangpur, 553,212 in Khulna, 190,256 in Barisal, and 234,513 in Sylhet division. 

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,634,000 lives and infected as many as 118,764,000 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 94,337,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 219 countries and territories across the planet.
