Covid-19: Bangladesh records 25 more deaths, 1,071 new cases

Another 737 patients recover from the infectious disease

Bangladesh has registered 1,071 new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally so far to 522,453.

The death toll climbed to 7,781 after 25 fatalities were recorded in a 24-hour time frame until Sunday morning, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a press release.

Another 737 patients recovered from Covid-19 through treatment at home and in hospital care, bringing the total recovery count to 466,801.

Of the 25 deceased — 17 men and eight women — 19 were from Dhaka Division, four from Mymensingh and one each from Sylhet and Chittagong. 

All of them died at different hospitals in the country.

So far, 5,912 men (76.98%) and 1,869 women (24.02%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected currently stands at 1.49%.

The DGHS said 12,979 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the 24-hour time frame.

As many as 12,920 samples, including some pending ones, were tested at the 181 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,071 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures showed a test positivity rate of 8.29%.

To date, 3,357,319 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall test positivity rate of 15.56%.

Up to this point, 466,801 patients — 89.35% of all infected — have recovered from Covid-19 across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,936,367 lives and infected 90,160,110 people across the world till Sunday evening, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.

As many as 64,558,426 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
