Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh have crossed the 400,000-mark, with 1,436 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.
The total number of confirmed cases in the country now stands at 400,251.
The country also recorded 15 new deaths within the same period of time. With the latest figures, the country's Covid-19 death toll has risen to 5,818, according to the daily virus update released on Monday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The health authorities said 1,493 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 316,600 patients (79.10%) have made full recovery across the country.
Of the 15 deceased, including nine men, 10 were from Dhaka division and three from Chittagong and one each from Barisal and Sylhet.
Fourteen of the victims died at different hospitals in the country and one died at home.
So far, 4,480 men (77%) and 1,338 women (23%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.45%.
The DGHS said 13,666 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.
As many as 13,758 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 111 authorized labs — both government and private — across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.44%.
To date, 2,271,347 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 17.62% so far.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,159,742 lives and infected 43,388,054 people across the world till 4pm on Monday, according to Worldometer.
As many as 31,922,400 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 215 countries and territories across the planet.
