The former director of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital (ShSMCH), medicine expert Prof Dr AKM Mujibur Rahman, has died from Covid-19 while undergoing treatment.

He died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 5:30am Tuesday, said Bangladesh Doctors Foundation Chairman Dr Shahed Rafi Pavel.

CMH sources said Dr Mujibur was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on June 2, after testing Covid-19 positive. Later, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as his condition did not change.

Before he died, Dr Mujibur served as the head of the medicine department at Care Medical College in the capital. Earlier, he had served as the principal of Enam Medical College at Savar.

According to the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), some 3,267 healthcare professionals — including 1,031 doctors and 884 nurses — were Covid-19 positive around the country until 11pm Monday.

With Dr Mujibur passing away, the death toll of doctors from Covid-19 rose to 38.

Dr Shahed said the former ShSMCH director’s body was being taken to his village home in Satkhira for the funeral and burial.

BMA in a statement mourned the death of Dr Mujibur and extended heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members.
