Covid-19: First plasma therapy patient in Khulna dies

The patient could not recover, despite receiving CPT

Update : 31 May 2020, 01:33 PM

A coronavirus patient, who had been undergoing treatment at Khulna Diabetic Hospital dedicated to treating Covid-19 patients, died on Sunday morning.

Previously, Convalescent Plasma Therapy (CPT) was administered to him after it was launched at Khulna Medical College Hospital(KMCH) on Wednesday for the first time in the district.

Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Sujat Ahmed said the patient (around 30 years old) got admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital on May 24 with coronavirus like symptoms.

He was later shifted to the diabetic hospital after his test result came out positive.

Dr Mehedi Newz, vice principal of KMCH, said: "CPT can be swiftly administered to Covid-19 patients who are in a critical condition. The process has no side-effects."

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended against using several drugs including remdesivir and plasma therapy for the treatment of Covid-19 on Wednesday.

CPT is under clinical trial at seven hospitals in Dhaka, which are collaborating with the Haematology Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said DMCH doctor Prof MA Khan earlier this month.

According to the authorities of Central Police Hospital, one of their two patients who received the therapy, has successfully recovered, he said.

Prof Khan, however, warned all, saying plasma therapy is only needed for critical patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and it is not necessary at all for other patients.

In Khulna, at least four people have died so far from Covid-19. Khulna health authorities say they have so far recorded 76 cases.

Coronavirus cases in Bangladesh rose to 44,608 with the detection of 1,764 new cases in 24 hours on Saturday. Besides, the country also reported 28 more deaths during the same period, raising the death tally to 610.

Meanwhile, 360 patients have recovered, the health authorities said. So far, 9,375 people have made recovery.
