The tally of Bangladeshi migrants in Maldives testing positive for Covid-19 has crossed the number of Maldivian nationals who contracted the disease.
According to the Maldivian Health Ministry, as of 1:38pm (Maldivian time) on Wednesday, 115 Bangladeshi nationals were among the total of 256 Covid-19 positive cases in the island nation – about 44.92% of the total cases.
At the same time, 104 Maldivian citizens have tested positive for Covid-19 – 40.63% of the total infected in the country. The previous day, the tally for local cases was 94.
On April 25, 29 Bangladeshi expatriates tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives – the highest in a single day.

Moreover, 28 Bangladeshis were diagnosed positive the day before, while 16 were diagnosed on April 19.
Of the infected Bangladeshis, 114 are males and one female, mostly in the age group of 31-40 years. The first case of a Bangladeshi migrant testing positive in the Maldives was reported on April 17.
The health authorities of the Indian Ocean archipelago have revised their infection list from the data shown on April 25, which said the first Bangladeshi to be infected was on April 18.
There is no death reported in the country while 17 patients have recovered to date. So far, only one patient has been hospitalized.
The Maldives has been seeing a steady rise in the curve of infected cases since April 16, when there were merely 28 reported cases.
The country on March 6 reported its first two cases of coronavirus.

Recently, a ship of Bangladesh Navy sent more than 100 tons of food, medicines, and medical equipment as assistance to the Maldives in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Home to more than 500,000 people (excluding migrants), the Maldives has around 100,000 migrants, mostly from Bangladesh, according to the Human Rights Watch.
The rights watchdog in late March had warned that Bangladeshi migrants were at “added risk” from Covid-19.
