Five Bangladeshi expatriates killed in Maldives fire

The High Commission said it is closely monitoring the situation

Five Bangladeshi migrant workers were killed and two others critically injured in a fire that broke out early Thursday on Dhigurah Island in the Maldives, the Bangladesh High Commission in Malé confirmed.

The deceased have been identified as Taj Uddin Islam, Md Sadar Ali, Md Robin Molla, Shafiqul Islam, and Md Nurnabi Sarkar.

According to the High Commission, two other Bangladeshi nationals -- Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain -- sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male.

Diplomatic officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and have taken steps to facilitate the early repatriation of the victims’ bodies to Bangladesh.

The High Commission is also maintaining contact with relevant Maldivian authorities regarding the incident.
