A fire broke out at a scrap warehouse of Tropical Nitex Ltd in the Chandra Palli Bidyut area of Kaliakair, Gazipur, amid ongoing garment workers’ protests on Sunday.
Two Fire Service units were dispatched to the scene but initially struggled to reach the site because of severe traffic congestion caused by the protests.
The units later resumed their journey, travelling against the flow of traffic on the highway under the escort of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel.
Tarekul Islam, station officer of Kaliakair Fire Service, confirmed the incident on Sunday afternoon.
He said the units were sent to the factory after receiving reports of a fire at its scrap warehouse. However, traffic congestion caused by the workers’ blockade initially forced them to turn back.
They later set off again with BGB assistance, travelling against the direction of traffic to reach the site.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
