At least 65 doctors across the country — mostly from Dhaka and Narayanganj — have so far tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

According to the data provided by the Bangladesh Doctors’ Foundation (BDF), as of Wednesday, 111 health workers have been infected by coronavirus across the country.

In the last 24 hours, 11 doctors have contracted the deadly virus.

Contacted, Dr Nirupam Das, founder and chief administrator of BDF, in disclosing the data to Dhaka Tribune said that one of the doctors who got infected is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital ICU.

“So far, most of the physicians who tested positive for coronavirus are from Dhaka and Narayanganj, the two major clusters for community transmission of the virus,” he said.

“We have collected this data from the authorities concerned,” he said. He added that “no fewer than 300 health professionals are in home quarantine.”

As of Wednesday, Bangladesh has confirmed 1,231 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 50 after four new fatalities were reported.

The fast spreading Covid-19 has so far killed 128,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.

Of the four people who died on Wednesday, one was a doctor.

This was the first case in Bangladesh of a doctor who lost his life to coronavirus while performing his duties on the frontlines of this pandemic.

The deceased, Dr Md Moyeen Uddin, assistant professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, died undergoing treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital this morning.

Earlier, BDF said that as of Saturday,  29 healthcare practitioners, including doctors, and nurses, got infected by coronavirus while attending patients.
