The Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital, located in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area, has been locked down as nine of its staff members – including two doctors – have tested positive for Covid-19.
The hospital was placed under lockdown on Tuesday afternoon, Inspector (Operations) Golam Azam of Hatirjheel police station said.
The inspector further said two doctors, five nurses and two hospital staff had been diagnosed with the Covid-19 infection, a severely acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2.
Responding to a question, Inspector Golam Azam said the hospital didn’t have any patients undergoing treatment at the time of lockdown.
“We suspect the disease may have spread from the emergency department,” he added.
Sohrab Akand, public relations officer of the hospital, told Dhaka Tribune: “Our emergency department also attends to patients with cold, fever and cough.
“We recently noticed something unusual, so some of our staff members – doctors, nurses and others – were tested at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Monday. We received their reports later in the evening that day. Nine of our staff members, including two doctors, tested positive for Covid-19,” he added.
“We informed the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR). They recommended locking the hospital down, so we did so on Tuesday,” he further said.
“We discharged the patients we had, and no new patients were admitted. Our healthcare services are now suspended,” he added.
