Till now, the number of active cases stands at 1,267,356

Update : 12 Apr 2020, 11:53 AM

Daily coronavirus cases dropped for the first time in five days, according to the latest figures.

The number of daily cases fell 14.4% on Saturday compared to the previous day.

The drop in new cases could spark hope that the pandemic has peaked, however one day’s figures are not sufficient to deduce whether lockdown measures across the world have been successful in bringing the virus under control.

According to worldometers, a total of 80,961 new cases in the world had been recorded on Saturday, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases to 1,779,842.

The numbers is 13,668 lower than that of the previous day, which was 94,629.

Saturday’s cases decreased by 20% from April 3, which were a record highest 101,566.

A week ago, on April 4, the number of new cases worldwide was 84,821 and a week before that on March 28, it was 66,761.

Till now, the number of active cases stands at 1,267,356.

Of the active cases 1,216,774 (96%) were identified to be in mild condition while the rest 50,582 (4%) have been marked as serious or critical.

At the same time, 404,491 people from across the world have recovered fully from the infection or were discharged from treatment – which was 79% of cases which had an outcome.

The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed 108,837 lives since its discovery in December 2019 – which was 21% of cases which had an outcome.

In January, China effectively shut down Wuhan and placed its 11 million residents in effective quarantine after the novel coronavirus infection turned into outbreak.

The virus is thought to have emerged late last year in a Wuhan market illegally trading wildlife. It can cause pneumonia, respiratory diseases, among others, and spreads between people in droplets from coughs and sneezes.

Till now, coronavirus or Covid-19 has affected 206 countries and territories around the world.
