Most Americans have huddled indoors as the total number of coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed the total number of cases in Spain and Italy combined.
The number of daily deaths and cases in the country has also soared to new highs for the fourth day in a row.
According to Worldometer, US reported 26,473 new cases and 1,048 deaths on Wednesday, taking the total number of Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus, cases across the country to 215,300 and deaths to 5,110.
On Tuesday, the country reported 24,742 new cases and 912 new deaths, which were 1,731 cases and 136 deaths fewer than that reported on Wednesday.
The total number of cases reported in US is 608 higher than the combined number of 104,118 cases in Spain and 110,574 cases in Italy, which is 214,692.
Till now, the number of active cases in US stands at 201,023 and 8,878 people have recovered.
New York state remained the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for more than a third of the US deaths.
Four new states -- Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Nevada-- imposed sweeping stay-at-home directives in response to the pandemic.
President Donald Trump said he saw no need for the federal government to issue a nationwide decree, with 39 states and the District of Columbia now requiring residents to stay home except for essential outings to the doctor or grocery store.
He also told a White House briefing on Wednesday he was considering a plan to halt flights to coronavirus hot spots, report Reuters.
White House medical experts have forecast that even if Americans hunker down in their homes to slow the spread of Covid-19, some 100,000 to 240,000 people could die from the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.
The fast spreading coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has infected 936,170 people and claimed 47,249 lives across 203 countries and territories and two international conveyances, according to Worldometer.
Globally, a total of 194,578 infected people have also recovered from Covid-19, a pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).
