The government has formed a committee to examine the implementation of the quota system in public service recruitment and to formulate recommendations accordingly.

A gazette notification was issued on Tuesday, appointing an additional secretary under the Ministry of Public Administration as the convener of the committee.

The 11-member committee has been instructed to submit its report to the government within 30 working days, as said in the notification.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing the existing quota provisions, which include a 5% reservation for the children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters, and Biranganas, 1% for ethnic minorities, and 1% for persons with disabilities and the third gender, and making recommendations based on the findings.

In July last year, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement launched protests demanding reforms in the quota system for public service recruitment.

Amidst nationwide demonstrations, the government issued a gazette on July 23, based on a court ruling, maintaining a 93% merit-based system and a 7% quota.
