CA: Govt’s ultimate goal is to formulate the July Charter

'If political parties could reach a consensus on reforms, implementing them would become significantly easier'

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday said that the ultimate goal of the interim government is to formulate the July Charter by reaching a consensus with political parties on necessary reforms.

“If I were to say that reforms are unnecessary, people would laugh. We are not denying the need for reforms. In fact, we need them deeply,” he remarked while delivering his closing address at the first meeting of the National Consensus Commission with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy.

The chief adviser observed that institutions had not been functioning properly, laws had not been fully operational, and there had been no limits to past misdeeds.

“This is why reforms are essential. Who would oppose them?” he questioned.

He emphasized that if political parties could reach a consensus on reforms, implementing them would become significantly easier.

“You will not have much opportunity to oppose them. If there are objections, they will be addressed,” Professor Yunus assured, stressing that all stakeholders were united in their commitment to reforms.

Therefore, he explained, the ultimate objective is to prepare the July Charter through consensus.

While discussions on its implementation will follow later, achieving consensus remains the priority.

“If we fail to reach an agreement, there will be no way forward,” he said.

Professor Yunus, who also serves as the chairman of the National Consensus Commission, announced that reform proposals from the six reform commissions would be uploaded to a website, allowing political parties to provide their input.

“Once we receive your feedback, we will determine the next steps,” he said.

He further said that once the July Charter is finalized, it will be sent to political parties for signing and then preserved in museums and other significant locations.

“The charter must be proclaimed by any means necessary to ensure the nation’s stability,” he said.

“We must accomplish this. The final word is that we cannot avoid it—we have no alternative. This is my appeal to you: you have the ability to make it happen,” the chief adviser added.
