The interim government has taken an initiative to amend existing laws for renaming three prominent rural development academies in the country.
The names of Gopalganj's "Bangabandhu Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development Academy," Jamalpur's "Sheikh Hasina Rural Development Academy," and "Sheikh Russell Rural Development Academy" of Rangpur are set to be changed as part of a government effort to align the naming conventions of similar institutions under the Ministry of Rural Development and Cooperatives.
At a meeting held Thursday at the office of the chief adviser in Tejgaon, the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, gave both policy and final approval to the draft ordinances for the name changes.
According to the Cabinet Division, the name of Gopalganj's "Bangabandhu Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development Academy" will be changed to "Rural Development Academy, Gopalganj." This decision aims to align the naming of the institution with other similar academies, such as Bogra's Rural Development Academy and the Bangladesh Rural Development Academy (BRDA).
The Bangabandhu Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development Academy (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 has been approved, pending vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
In addition, the name of Jamalpur's "Sheikh Hasina Rural Development Academy" will be updated to "Rural Development Academy, Jamalpur."
The Sheikh Hasina Rural Development Academy, Jamalpur (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 has also received approval, pending the same vetting process.
Lastly, the name of "Sheikh Russell Rural Development Academy, Rangpur" will be changed to "Rural Development Academy, Rangpur."
The draft for the Sheikh Russell Rural Development Academy, Rangpur (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 has been given final approval, again pending vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
On a different note, the Advisory Council decided that the Chief Adviser will visit the Aynagar as soon as possible. Local and foreign media will accompany him during the visit.
The draft of the National Identity Registration Act (Repeal) Ordinance, 2025 was also taken up for in-principle and final approval in the Advisory Council meeting.
The Cabinet Division, after consultation with the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division,
Ministry of Home Affairs, Local Government Division and Election Commission Secretariat, has asked the authorities to revise the draft of the ordinance and present it to the Advisory Council.
In addition, the Advisory Council has given final approval in principle to the draft of the International Crimes (Tribunal) (Amendment) Ordinance. However, the notification did not say anything about the changes being brought by amending the law.
It says that the International Crime (Tribunal) (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 has been formulated to further amend the International Crime (Tribunal) Act 1973 in order to make it timely. The draft ordinance has been finally approved by the Advisory Council meeting with necessary amendments and subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department.
The meeting discussed the steps taken to ensure transportation of goods through TCB, large-scale import and smooth supply to keep commodity prices stable during Ramadan.
The meeting also discussed the issue of avoiding load shedding during Ramadan and maintaining normal power supply.
Public anger due to provocative statements
A statement by the interim government said that the vandalism of house number 32 in Dhanmondi was unintended and undesirable. Sheikh Hasina's provocative statements against the July Uprising while in exile in India have created deep anger in the public mind.
The statement mentioned that there has been no attack or vandalism of any kind at house number 32 in the last six months. This happened last night around the statement of the fugitive Sheikh Hasina, which has two parts.
Firstly, Sheikh Hasina has insulted and humiliated those who sacrificed themselves in the July Uprising. By making irrelevant, absurd and hateful statements regarding the death of the martyr, the fugitive Sheikh Hasina has disrespected and disrespected the July Uprising.
Secondly, Sheikh Hasina continues to speak and threaten the July mass uprising and every person who participated in the mass uprising in the same tone that she used to use while in power. Sheikh Hasina has also threatened to create instability in the country.
The statement goes on to say that the trial of those involved in the July massacre is in full swing. The interim government is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of the massacre are brought to justice. The government will examine what legal action can be taken against those involved in provocative activities, it added.
