PM: Govt to procure more rice this year

The premier made the announcement while addressing a videoconference with the deputy commissioners (DCs) and officials of 17 districts under Khulna and Barisal divisions

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that this year the government will purchase an additional 200,000 metric tons of rice during the upcoming Boro season compared to the previous year.

"Boro rice harvesting will begin within a few days. I have ordered procurement of more rice this year from the cultivators so that they can get fair prices," she said on Sunday.

The premier made the announcement while addressing a videoconference with the deputy commissioners (DCs) and officials of 17 districts under Khulna and Barisal divisions.

"Additional 200,000 metric ton of rice will be purchased this year compared to the previous year," she added.

The videoconference began from her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka around 10am.

"We have to keep continuing our agricultural work. We have to ensure food security.”
