Less than 1% candidates aged over 29 passed the 37th Bangladesh Civil Service examination, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said.
The figure for people aged over 29 was 0.61% in 37th BCS, 3.23% in 36th BCS and 3.4% in 35th BCS, she said while briefing the media at her official Ganabhaban residence on Monday afternoon about the outcomes of her just-concluded visit to China.
The premier disclosed the figure responding to a query on the protests demanding extension of the age limit for government jobs to 35 from existing 30.
For people aged 23 to 25 years, the pass rate was 40.7% in 35th BCS, 37.45% in 36th BCS, and 43.65% in 37th BCS. Candidates aged between 25 to 27 years saw 23.29% pass rate in 35th BCS, 34.78% in 36th BCS, and 23.35% in 37th BCS.
For candidates with 27 to 29 years, the pass rate was 13.17% in 35th BCS, 14.89% in 36th BCS, and 7.20% in 37th BCS, the premier said.
If a candidate passes the BCS examination at the age of 35, attends training for two more years and starts government service at the age of 37, how come the government will operate the country, asked Hasina.
"We have to run the development activities with the young people who are meritorious and holds better working capacity," she said.
