‘Strengthen diplomatic ties with Modi govt’

Update : 20 May 2014, 08:13 PM

A senior Awami League leader urged the government yesterday to strengthen diplomatic ties with India’s new government.

“India’s new government, led by Narendra Modi, is being formed. The country believes in democracy. We hope our issues with them can be resolved, including the ones regarding agreements on land boundaries, even though it is late,” said Suranjit Sengupta at a discussion in Dhaka city.

“To resolve the issues, our diplomatic efforts must be fast-tracked and specific, with democratic representation of both sides,” he said, adding, “Nothing can be done (achieved) by Habil and Kabil (Cain and Abel).”

Suranjit, an Awami League Advisory Council member, also criticised the BNP for congratulating Modi on his landslide victory in the election.

“The BNP has been pursuing an anti-India policy in politics since it was floated, but now the party is congratulating Modi in an effort to enhance its ties (with India),” he said.

“Before pursuing better ties with India, they must announce publicly that they will not do any anti-India politics from now on,” he said.

The next parliamentary election will be held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in accordance with the Constitution, as in the last election, unless any big change is brought to the Constitution, he said.

Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers’ auditorium at Kakrail.
