PM in talks with Canada to bring back Noor Chowdhury

Law Minister Anisul Huq said that the government was in talks with the Canadian government to extradite Noor Chowdhury, one of the convicts in the murder of Bangabandhu, who stands to face hanging. The law minister made the comments after a conference with Canadian High Commissioner Benoît-Pierre Laramée at the Secretariat on Tuesday. Benoît-Pierre Laramée is set to join the Canadian Embassy in Venezuela after serving as the high commissioner to Bangladesh for a very long time. The conference on Tuesday marked his farewell to Law Minister Anisul Huq. Answering questions after the high commissioner left, Anisul Huq said: “The self-proclaimed murderer of Bangabandhu, Noor Chowdhury, who stands to be hanged for his crimes, is currently in Canada. There are ongoing discussions between the government and the Canadian government to bring him back to Bangladesh. We discussed this issue today with the Canadian high commissioner as well.” The law minister also expressed hope that Noor Chowdhury would be brought back to the country and his sentence would be carried out swiftly. When asked about the full report of the appeal decision to cancel the 16th Amendment to the constitution, he said: “The full report is 800 pages long. I will read it first, and then make comments on it.”
