Dhaka, Delhi to hold series of meetings this month

Update : 04 Mar 2014, 09:05 PM

A series of high-level official meetings will be held between Bangladesh and India in March.

Measurement of water flow at Hardinge Bridge in Bangladesh and at Farrakah point in India, joint working group meetings of fisheries and livestock and commerce ministries, director general level talks between BGB-BSF and regional commander level meetings of BGB-BSF will be held throughout this month.

“We are going to measure the water flow at Hardinge Bridge tomorrow and the flow at Farrakah point on March 10,” a senior official of the Joint River Commission (JRC) told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

This was an annual arrangement and once in a year top officials of the JRC measure the water flow, he added.

However, the joint observation committee under the JRC measured water flow for five months, the official said.

A Bangladesh delegation led by JRC member Mir Sajjad Hossain will leave for Kolkata on March 8 to measure the water flow at Farakkah point, he added.

The first Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the two fisheries and livestock ministries will be held on March 12 and 13 in Dhaka.

Dhaka and New Delhi signed a deal in 2011 to hold the JWG on regular basis but it did not take place last year because of last minute postponement by the Indian side, said an official of the fisheries and livestock ministry.

Technical cooperation, technology transfer and training would dominate the first meeting, he said. Joint Secretary of the ministry Anisur Rahman will lead the Bangladesh delegation.

Dhaka and New Delhi will have its ninth round of the JWG meeting of the commerce ministry this month.  The date was yet to be fixed but it would be held this month, confirmed a commerce and foreign ministry official.
