State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and highlighted the ministry’s intention to play a more proactive role.
She emphasized sustained political engagement, cultural initiatives and broader stakeholder involvement.
The issues were discussed when outgoing Secretary General of SAARC Ambassador Md Golam Sarwar paid a farewell call on the state minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both sides underscored the importance of renewed political attention and sustained efforts to reinvigorate the SAARC process and strengthen regional cooperation in South Asia, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The secretary general briefed the state minister on the current state of the SAARC, noting the need for initiatives to overcome various challenges.
He highlighted the continuation of regular activities and development-partner-supported programs and informed that the SAARC Development Report is expected by end 2026.
The state minister expressed Bangladesh’s appreciation for Ambassador Sarwar’s stewardship and conveyed confidence that the momentum achieved during his tenure would continue under his successor, with Bangladesh’s continued support and cooperation.
She also conveyed her best wishes for a smooth conclusion of his tenure and a seamless transition to his successor.
