US embassy: Visitor visa does not determine length of stay

In a statement, the embassy said the expiration date of a B1/B2 visitor visa does not indicate how long a traveller can remain in the US

Update : 11 Apr 2026, 01:20 PM

The US Embassy in Dhaka has said that the duration of stay for international travellers in the United States is determined by immigration officers upon arrival, not by the validity of the visa.

In a statement, the embassy said the expiration date of a B1/B2 visitor visa does not indicate how long a traveller can remain in the US.

Instead, visitors are advised to check the “Admit Until Date” on their I-94 record to determine their authorised period of stay.

The I-94 is an arrival/departure record issued by a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer to foreign visitors upon entry into the United States.

It serves as a valid entry document and includes details such as the date of entry, visa classification and the maximum permitted duration of stay. The document is also important for verifying immigration status and, where applicable, work authorisation.
