Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has urged greater US cooperation in enhancing Bangladesh’s security capabilities.
The request came during a courtesy meeting with Megan Bouldin, deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Dhaka, at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The two sides discussed a range of bilateral issues, including law and order, counter-terrorism, case prosecution, and addressing online sexual harassment targeting young women.
Welcoming the US diplomat, the adviser described the United States as a longstanding partner in Bangladesh’s counter-terrorism efforts. He acknowledged the US’s role in equipping and training the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit, which has helped modernise the force.
He thanked the US for its continued support and expressed hope for further collaboration.
Bouldin affirmed the US’s ongoing commitment to Bangladesh’s security sector, noting that the threat of terrorism and militancy is a global concern. She said, “Bangladesh is no exception.”
In response, the Home Adviser stated that law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to tackle all forms of crime, not just terrorism.
He also said special security measures have been implemented in the Baridhara diplomatic zone, including Coast Guard deployment alongside regular forces.
Bouldin appreciated the enhanced security around the US Embassy and underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination, communication, and intelligence sharing to ensure national and diplomatic security.
