Nahid: Anti-Bangladesh policies are detrimental to India’s interests

The adviser criticized India’s use of 'minority persecution' claims to support the Awami League

India risks destabilizing its internal politics by meddling in Bangladesh's domestic affairs, said the Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam.

In a post on X, the adviser said that fostering anti-Bangladesh and anti-Muslim narratives would ultimately work against India’s national interests.

Nahid criticized India’s use of “minority persecution” claims to support the Awami League, which he accused of committing atrocities against minorities and orchestrating genocide in Bangladesh.

He argued that this approach disrupts Bangladesh’s democratic progress and nation-building efforts.

The adviser urged Indian policymakers to move beyond viewing Bangladesh through the Awami League's lens and to pursue a relationship grounded in fairness, equity, and mutual respect.

He said that continued support for Sheikh Hasina, whom he described as a fugitive implicated in grave crimes, undermines shared democratic values between the two nations.

Calling for an end to "false propaganda" against Bangladesh, Nahid highlighted that solidarity between the people of both countries has historically transcended political divisions.

He pointed to the July uprising in Bangladesh, during which Indian students from Kolkata and Delhi stood with Bangladeshis in opposition to Sheikh Hasina’s alleged actions.

These Indian allies, he said: "Represent the democratic spirit and harmony both nations should strive for."

Nahid also underscored the deep cultural and historical connections Bangladesh shares with regions such as West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura, saying that they are essential stakeholders in fostering cooperation.

However, he accused India’s ruling elite and certain nationalist forces of trying to sabotage these ties by promoting divisive politics and stoking animosity toward Bangladesh.

Critiquing India’s stance on minority rights, Nahid reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to ensuring dignity, security, and equal citizenship for all its minority communities, including Hindus.

He alleged that minorities in Bangladesh faced the greatest persecution under the Awami League, despite the unconditional support the party received from Delhi.

Nahid concluded by stressing the interdependence of stability between the two nations.

“India must recognize that its integrity is closely tied to a stable and harmonious Bangladesh,” he said.
