The United States insists that anyone responsible for violence must be held accountable, regardless of their identity.
"We have made clear that there’s no excuse for violence, either conducted against those conducting peaceful protests or conducted by those protesting, and anyone that’s responsible for violence should be held accountable," State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said while replying to a question during a daily briefing in Washington on Wednesday.
The question came as the interim government had said in a statement recently that the students and people who had actively participated in the July movement and worked in favour of it during this period would not face any cases, arrests or harassment for any incidents related to the uprising.
The home ministry directive added that all concerned had been instructed to remain extremely vigilant regarding this matter.
Meanwhile, in response to a question about the rendition of an Islamic song at a Durga Puja event and whether the US would engage with the Bangladeshi government to ensure the protection of religious freedom and minority rights, Miller said: "We are committed to religious freedom in Bangladesh and elsewhere."
Regarding that specific incident, he added: "I’ll take it back and get you an answer."
