Foreign minister: Compare US deal with other countries before judging

'It is good that the US agreement is being discussed; any deal should be open to scrutiny'

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has urged a comparative assessment of the agreement signed with the United States, saying it should be evaluated alongside similar deals made by other countries.

The agreement, finalized toward the end of the interim government’s tenure, continues to face intense debate, with many calling for its cancellation.

“It is good that the US agreement is being discussed. Any deal should be open to scrutiny,” he said.

“We did not sign this alone—many countries have entered into similar agreements. Indonesia, for instance, agreed to 231 such conditions. So, when evaluating Bangladesh’s deal, it should be read alongside those of Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and others, he said.

He made the comments on Tuesday, before departing for Beijing, responding to questions from journalists.

The minister emphasised a comparative approach, saying discussions should focus on what Bangladesh gained versus what it did not.

“The United States imposed reciprocal tariffs—around 39 or 37% in our case. Other countries also negotiated reductions. Vietnam secured 20%, while we secured 19%,” he said, noting that such agreements are now publicly available.

“Compare the terms—rates, policy commitments, and purchase obligations—with those of other countries. Only then can a clear picture emerge,” he added.

Asked whether progress on the Teesta agreement would be possible after the West Bengal elections, Rahman said no government has yet been formed there.

“It is not my job to read their minds about what they will do,” he said.
