The United States has said those responsible for human rights violations in Bangladesh over the past few months need to be held accountable.
“… we want to see human rights protected, and ultimately those responsible for violations of the human rights of the Bangladeshi people over the past few months need to be held accountable,” said US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller at a press briefing in Washington on Monday.
When asked about Durga Puja, the safety of the Hindu community in Bangladesh, and India’s request to the Bangladeshi government to protect Hindus, Miller responded: "Of course, we want to see the rights of minorities protected in Bangladesh as often as true all around the world.”
Mathew Miller was also asked what specific actions the US will take in response to the urgent appeal from the French-based human rights organization JMBF regarding the rise in mob violence and lynching in Bangladesh.
Additionally, he was asked US will ensure accountability for human rights violations, given the growing concern over the increasing number of legal cases being filed against innocent individuals.
In response, Miller said he was unaware of the specific incident mentioned by the questioner. However, he added that just two weeks ago, the US secretary of state met with Bangladesh's chief adviser at the United Nations.
